Conversion Optimization Rate: Increase A Web Site’s Sales Conversion Rate
OK, so how can you increase your conversion rate? Here is one example of how I was able to increase conversion rates by .5% (this was a 50% increase in sales for this particular website) with this simple test method.
AS an FYI, I always take Monday morning’s to evaluate conversion rates. I do this because any significant decreases will now be my priority for the week to fix. If you can, try and set aside an hour every Monday AM (first thing) to evaluate your web sites metrics. Things like visits, visitor paths, referrers , conversion rates, etc. This one habit helped increase my success rate significantly because it provided the focus that I need. Ok that being said, try this simple and easy tip.
In this example, our client was using a graphic button that stated “Buy” (this is quite common) for customers to add products to shopping carts. We changed the “buy” button to state “Add to Cart”. If you use a graphic on your website for customers to use to buy things, this is a really easy test to implement. In this case, we just changed the “Buy” graphic to state “Add to Cart”, and then tracked the results. That’s all we did! We just swapped graphic. And guess what, our conversion rate increased by .5%!
Here is the testing (always test and track!) implementation that I recommend
- Make a backup copy of your current buy button graphic (for our example lets assume the filename of the graphic is. buy.gif, so it now becomes buy-backup.gif)
- Make a new graphic that states” Add to Cart” or Add to Bag” (Do not change the size or anything else, only the text on the button!)
- Name the new graphic “buy.gif”
- Upload the new version of buy.gif to your server (this will overwrite your old one, so make sure you have that backup made)
- Walla La! All done!. Now just sit back and measure your results. (If you make typically 100 sales a day, we recommend testing this method for 1 week).
- If in 1 week your conversion rate goes down, just rename your back up copy of the old “buy” button to “buy.gif” and load up to the server. You are now back to your old state.
This is a simple implementation to test a new method to increase your web sites conversion rate. Total time to implement should take under 1 hour (even less really). If you don’t want to test for 1 week, then just try it for a couple of days. You can also try other “text” on the graphic such as “Buy Now”, etc. Each website is different, and where on one website “Add to Cart” increases conversions, on another the “Buy Now” may increase conversions. The only true way to tell is to test and measure. Try this technique if you are looking for easy and quick ways to test conversion rate optimization.
